WHERE FOUND:- CAMBODIA & THAILAND

SIZE:- 3 INCHES

TEMPERATURE RANGED:- 70-83F

PH:- 6.0-8.0

FOOD:- CARNIVOROUS

BREEDING:-

Betta are easy to spawn, that is if the male do not kill the female or the other way around. Yes sometimes the female will kill the male. I had this  to happen, many a times. You want a breeder female, one that is old enough to spawn.

You then put her in the breeding aquarium at least 24 hours before you put the male in. Now you should have some hiding places in the tank to. Then you put a male in and if he is ready, he will check everything out, and then he will begin building a bubble nest. Then if the female is ready to spawn, they will mate. He will pick most of the eggs up in his mouth and spit them into a bubble nest.

When they are done you will need to take a female out, because he will kill her then. Now if they do not make a nest in a day or so, you may want to try a different male or female.

The eggs will hatch with-in 24-48 hours, or there about. Any young that fall from the nest he will get and put back into the nest. Now you will need to keep an eye on him at all times. He will protect the young untill they are 6 – 10 days old. or there about. Then he will turn and eat them all!! So you must take him out, if you want to save the young. Now you will need special baby fish food, which you should be able to get from your local pet shop.

Doing it this way, i had spawn thousand & thousands of them over the years. Peoples that known me tell me i got a wet thumb.

MY COMMENTS:-

The betta was maybe the first egg layer i ever spawn. I raised them up and sold them to the pet shop in Bridgewater N.S. I was lucky because at that time i know very little about spawning fish. But over the years i had raised 1000′s of them. As i write this, i got a pair of betta spawning.

Most pet shop keep their betta in a cup. This should not be allowed. I keep one male betta in each of my aquariums, with other fish. And i find they get along good with other fish, but do not keep them with cichlids.

Today it may be possible to get betta in most any color. The few years ago the snow white betta was very hard to get but now they are easy to get. Most people only want the red or blue color of betta. But the white betta with blue or red fin is very pretty to look at.

“GREEN SWORDTAIL”

XIPHOPHORUS HELLERI ( HECKEL,1848 )

WHERE FOUND:- CENTRAL AMERICA

SIZE:- 4-5 INCHES

TEMPERATURE RANGED:- 70-82F

PH:- 7.0-8.0

FOOD:- OMNIVOROUS

MY COMMENTS:- Swordtails is as most people’s today should
know, a fish that have their young born alive. This way the young have got a
head start on life, so to speak. When the young are born, they will drop to the
bottom of the aquarium. Then in a few minutes they will head for a surface of
the aquarium. Once they get to the surface, they will look for somewhere to
hide. So for this reason you should have some live aquarium plants floating on
the water surface.
