Salt maybe the greatest medicine, there is when it come to tropical fish. In the fall of the year, you go to the doctor and get your flu shot. By doing this, you may not get the flu. Well salt is a same thing for fish. I used salt in all of my aquariums and had done so all my life, with no problems.

Salt will cure a lot of different diseases. Salt will cure ick and fungus, for one thing. It will also help to protect the slim coat that all fish have. If your fish get stress out, salt may help to clam them down to. Plus there a lot more diseases it will cure to. If you got some salt in your aquariums, your fish will feel better and maybe live longer.

Now some fish can take more salt than others. Molly had been found as far as eight miles out to sea. They can live in 100% saltwater and do good. Sword-tails, platys and guppies can take more than most fish. When the salt content of the aquarium get to high, the guppy will close it fins, as a sign it do not like it. Plec & catfish do not like to much salt.

But all fish will do better with a least one tablespoon of sea salt in their aquarium. I had used it as high as 5 table-spoons of salt per gallon on fish with no ill effete. I used store brought “pickling salt”. This was what most of the old people used and i have no problem at all. I had also used real sea salt many a times with no problem. But do not used iodine salt. Because the iodine is or can be bad for the fish.

I know what is in my tap water, do you? Some well water may or may not have salt in it. So if your water got salt in it and you add more, that could be very bad for your fish. I have my water tested every now and then, this way i know what in it.

Salt is one of those things that no body can agreed on. 50% of the people used it and 50 % of the people will not used it. So with that said, it is up to you if you used it or not. The advice that i give is what work for me. It may or may not work for you, so be carefully.

Paradise fish build a bubble nest. He will even put bits of live plants in the making of his nest. All this time the female is waiting and watching.

When the nest is done, then they will spawn. He will warp himself around the female. She then lays the eggs, then he will pick them up in his mouth and put them in the bubble nest. They will mate a numbers of times.

When they are done, you should take the female out. For the next few days, feed her good, cause she been threw a lot.

The male will take care of the nest. The eggs will hatch in 1 or 2 days. Any young that fall out of the nest, he will pick up and put back in the nest. He will be very busy.

Once they become free-swimming, you might want to take the male out because he then will eat them. He will take care of them for approx 4 to 7 days after they are born. In order to raise them up, you will need some special fry food.

MY COMMENTS:-

The Paradise Fish is one of my favorite breed of freshwater fish. It is a very easy fish to care for, plus they are very easy to spawn. But with that said, you may not want to get the “black Paradise Fish”. They can be very mean. I find the blue types, to be very nice. I had always kept them in with other smaller fish, with no trouble. They will eat any baby fish if they can get them. But for me they do not seem to pick on any other fish.

The very first time i got them to spawn for me, they had 252 youngs that live. When the youngs was 5 months old i sold them to a another pet shop, because at that time i did not have my own pet shop. Of those 252 youngs, only 2 of them was males.

Most fish books will tell you that cherry barbs are hard to spawn and have very few youngs. But i had found that not true

FOOD:- OMNIVOROUS

BREEDING:-

Well, you will need a pair of them, a tank with water in it and you got baby. It just that easy. I recommend at least a 20 gallon aquarium, but smaller will work. Put some large rocks in the tank and put your fish in. I also recommend you used what is called the baby saver filters. The power filter, will suck them up and may kill them.

Within one to four days or there about, they will lay eggs. The eggs may or may not be hidden from sight. The eggs will hatch in one to two days. Now you will need a special baby fish food for the fry to eat. In the few days, you will be able to feed them live brine shrimps. If you do this they will grow quite fast. When the fry get to about 2 to 3 weeks old, you might want to take mommy and daddy out. Because they will be ready to spawn again.

COMMENTS:-

For anyone who want to try breeding cichlids, i recommend beginning with convict cichlid. These are very easy to get to spawn, some people will say to easy. lol. The male is bigger than the female. The male top back fin will be more pointed, while the female top back fin will be more rounded. Plus the female will be redder in the belly area. Most of them will take very good care of their young. Some of mine have young every 2-3 weeks. When they get ready to spawn, you will need to take any other young out and put them in their own tank. Because they will protect your young at all cost. If you put your hand in their tank, when they got young, they will attacked your hand and they got teeth, so they can bite. I recommend you spawn them in at least a 20 gall aquarium or biggest. So with this said, have fun.
